Treasury prices fall as investors move into stocks

NEW YORK — Treasurys fell Wednesday, sending their yields higher, as investors dropped safe-haven investments in favor of stocks . In afternoon trading, the benchmark 10-year Treasury fell 14/32 to 101 27/32, pushing its yield up to 3.40 percent from 3.34 percent late Tuesday. Stocks benefited at bonds' expense as a fresh round of stronger earnings from banks and technology companies including Wells Fargo & Co., Morgan Stanley and Yahoo Inc. sent major stock indexes higher. U.S. stocks stayed above the threshold reached yesterday as a late-session buying helped offset weakness in banking and technology shares.  Financials dragged on stocks through the early afternoon even as Goldman Sachs and Citigroup reported better-than-expected profit reports.   However, the final fifteen minutes witnessed much of the activity as higher oil prices sent energy stocks higher and, in turn, helped the broader market. Qatar is following Abu Dhabi in downsizing its stake in the British bank Barclays, only acquired less than a year ago to help the bank survive the global financial crisis without state aid.
