Four Questions
Why is it that whenever someone posts something critical, or at least skeptical, of “THE FUTURE” everyone in the comments section has to take time out of their busy days to call that person a Luddite or a fool or to gleefully taunt the original poster that he’ll be out of the business in five years/months/minutes because nobody can stop the awesome power of TEH INTERNETS!1! Seriously, though, I thought Eric Obenauf’s piece on The Rumpus was worthwhile. I don’t happen to share his lack of [more...]

South Park (Season 4) DVD Review
Launching its premiere broadcast in late summer 1997, South Park instantly ascended to the status of pop culture icon with its rapier-like wit and unique brand of sarcasm. Following the exploits of four elementary school kids – Kyle, Cartman, Stan, and Kenny – the series utilizes amateurish drawing skills, but grade-A humor. The creation of two friends, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, South Park remains one of Comedy Central’s most popular cable programs to this day. . . [more...]

Family Forced into Poverty to Insure Daughter
This post is written by Natalie O'Reilly and crossposted from Hipmama.org . I'm writing this today, not because I see myself as a political activist, but because our daughter lives with an on-going, critical need for healthcare, and because I want everyone to be able to put a face to the idea of healthcare reform. And what better face than our goofy, gorgeous, brave baby girl's? Anyone who has ever met my daughter knows that she is just about the most lovable and kind person ever born. [more...]

WWTW Rewind: ‘Sssssss’ (1973)
Horror movies from the ’70s had a lock on creepy. The uncertain soundtracks. The clumsy effects which still made your skin crawl. And the acting, often amateurish but with just a touch of reality that proved unnerving. “ Sssssss ” had dollops of all of those elements plus a gaggle of snakes - a primo scare tactic unto themselves. “Sssssss” (that’s seven ‘Ss’ for anyone counting) stars Strother Martin as the latest in a long line of mad scientists. His Dr. [more...]

Charitable Preparedness
I’ll be blunt. I’ve rewritten the beginning of this article nearly 10 times now trying to lessen its uncomfortable impact. But it’s nearing 1:00 in the afternoon already and I still haven’t successfully eliminated any discomfort the article may convey. So, I’m just going to say it like it is.If you are smart, you will have a year’s supply of necessities for you and your family stored. But if you are wise, you will have extra supplies on hand for the refugees that you will inevitably encounter [more...]

Orangutans struggle as palm oil booms
by Louise Boronyak, Cosmos Online Source: http://www.cosmosmagazine.com/features/online/3086/oil-or-orangutans Illegal logging and palm oil plantations are destroying forest habitat and food sources for the orangutans of Borneo and Sumatra. We all have a part to play in resolving the issue. There is something enchanting about a rainforest landscape.
